Athens: Birth of Democracy

The Story

Twenty-five centuries ago, ordinary Athenians did something unprecedented: they overthrew tyrants and claimed power for themselves. "Demos means the people. Kratos means power," explains historian Paul Cartledge. A new revolutionary form of government "for the people by the people” was born.

Through excavations, vivid animation, and experimental archaeology, this documentary uncovers democracy's violent origins. A mass grave reveals the civil war that preceded political awakening. "These were victims of citizens fighting citizens," says archaeologist Stella Chryssoulaki—a grim warning from the past.

In the ancient Agora, archaeologist John Camp stands where citizens once debated their fate. Officials were chosen by lottery, not election. Scientists work with builders using ancient materials to reconstruct and test the kleroterion—the ingenious machine that randomly selected representatives, guaranteeing equal representation by all citizens.

Historian Vincent Azoulay traces democracy's fragile evolution: from political assassinations to revolutionary reforms by Cleisthenes to ostracism—a method that banished anyone who threatened democracy before they seized control.

Yet Athenian democracy was also profoundly flawed. While citizens debated, slaves laboured unseen and women and non-citizens were excluded. "Who counted as ‘a citizen' remains an urgent question," reflects historian Paulin Ismard.

Democracy survived a century, collapsed twice, and recovered—until Macedonian conquest ended it in 322 BCE.It would be 2,000 years before democratic government returned. This film asks: What can democracy in ancient Athens teach us about protecting democracy today?
